What Do Teslas Use Instead Of Gas?

Tesla vehicles have all-electric motors instead of traditional internal combustion engines – they don’t even have backup fuel tanks.

Unlike regular cars, Teslas use high-capacity battery packs that provide power to the induction motor, first invented by Nikola Tesla. Simply put, the motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy and propels the vehicle forward. One advantage of induction motors is that they don’t have permanent magnets or brushes like your typical IC engine – yet they deliver so much power. Also, the speed of the motor’s rotation is determined by the variable frequency of the power supply. In fact, the main motor can spin up to 18,000 rpm. A standard Tesla battery pack consists of common lithium-ion battery cells, the exact ones we use on a regular basis. All the battery cells are interwoven in a combination of parallel and series to create enough power for the motor to run the car.

However, one principle that distinguishes Tesla from the competition is glycol coolant. The coolant is applied through the metallic inner tubes that pass through the tiny gaps between the battery cells. Cooling is optimized by using plenty of small cells instead of a few large cells. A higher battery life pack is guaranteed because the temperature is evenly distributed within the cells, effectively reducing thermal hot spots.

Where Can Tesla Batteries Charge?

Tesla batteries can be charged at home or on the road using three primary methods. The first is with the included home slow charger, which plugs into a 120-volt home outlet. This charging method takes many hours and is the least efficient way to charge a Tesla.

The second method is with the Tesla Wall Charger. This charging unit, which wires directly into your home electrical infrastructure, is much more powerful. Tesla owners who plug their cars into this charger when they get off work usually have a full charge when they wake up the following morning to use the car again.

The third method is also the fastest. This method uses Tesla ‘Superchargers’ located around the country in parking lots and at gas stations.

Where Does Tesla Electricity Come From?

So, where do Tesla chargers get their electricity? The answer is complicated, as it depends on where you are. For example, a Tesla charging station in Pennsylvania is most likely to get its electricity from a coal-fired power plant located nearby.

Alternatively, a charging station located in Texas could get its power from coal, nuclear, wind, solar, or natural gas power plants. The same is true for other areas that favor geothermal, wind, or hydroelectric power. So in some parts of the country, the Hoover Dam may have actually charged your car.

So yes, something usually has to be burned to create electricity for Tesla cars. That said, many electric car charging locations receive much of their power from nearby solar panels—sometimes located directly overhead.

Can You Use Gasoline To Charge A Tesla?

Sure, you can use gasoline to charge a Tesla if you want. But since Tesla cars don’t have an engine or a fuel tank, you’ll need to use a separate one.

It’s possible to charge a Tesla using a gasoline-powered generator, and many people have done it during power outages or while in remote areas. Diesel generators are also common but on a larger scale.

But this charging process is even less efficient than gasoline engines, which themselves are pitifully inefficient and waste a tremendous amount of energy.

Do Tesla Cars Charge Too Slowly?

No, Tesla cars do not charge slowly. In fact, they charge quite fast when compared to other battery-powered devices. Tesla chargers can add substantial power to a battery pack in ten to fifteen minutes.

Although this is slower than the time it takes to fill a fuel tank, the benefits of electric cars likely outweigh the inconvenience of the few extra minutes it takes to charge a big automotive battery.

Why Tesla Chose Battery Power

Batteries and electricity were the obvious choices for Tesla. This fact was clear from the very beginnings of the company, which was founded in 2004 as a producer of only electric cars. From what we understand, this has always been the goal—Tesla vehicles were never meant to use gas.

How long a Tesla car stays charged depends on a number of factors such as driving style, terrain, type of battery, the battery status.

This means your Tesla will adjust the mile range up or down depending on current driving conditions. If you are driving aggressively while stomping on the pedal, then the mile of the range will be slightly less.

Yes and No. Tesla charging is free for US residents only. Then again, only certain Tesla models qualify for free charging while other Tesla owners have to pay for charging. After usurping the free charging offer, Tesla car owners have to pay to use any of the superchargers set up by the company.

The cost of charging at a Tesla supercharger varies sharply depending on location and vehicle model. In most cases, it would cost you about $0.25 per KW to charge your vehicle at a Tesla supercharger. These rates apply to Tesla vehicles bought after January 2017.

Is Tesla Cheaper Than Gas?

No doubt, Tesla is far much cheaper than gas. According to the National Resources Defense Council, the amount of electricity required to operate a Tesla or any electric vehicle over 15 years is $14,480 cheaper than fueling a gas-powered vehicle over the same period. This clearly shows that Tesla vehicles are cheaper than traditional, gas-powered cars.

Besides, Tesla vehicles are cheaper to maintain since they do not have many moving parts. They do not use combustion to operate the engine and they do not require frequent servicing as is the case with gas-powered cars.

Most importantly, Tesla vehicles have the least carbon footprint, and this goes a long way to cut down on costs used to preserve the environment.
